The evolution of Agentic AI is moving beyond chatbots and virtual assistants into real-world business transactions. In a significant milestone for autonomous commerce, Visa and Chinese fintech LianLian DigiTech have successfully completed what they describe as Greater China’s first live B2B agentic payment transaction. The achievement demonstrates how AI agents are beginning to manage not only purchasing decisions but also secure payment execution within enterprise environments.
AI Agents Are Becoming Active Participants in Commerce
The transaction was powered by LoopXPay, an AI agent developed by LianLian. Unlike traditional AI assistants that simply recommend products or provide insights, LoopXPay autonomously managed the procurement process from start to finish.
Within a single workflow, the AI agent identified the purchasing requirement, searched for suitable suppliers, compared available options, selected the best match, placed the order, and completed the payment. The entire process was carried out while operating within predefined spending limits and approval rules established by the business, ensuring that organizations maintained oversight while reducing manual intervention.
The demonstration illustrates how Agentic AI is evolving into an autonomous digital workforce capable of executing routine commercial activities with speed and efficiency.
Trust and Identity Become Critical for AI Payments
As AI agents begin initiating financial transactions, establishing trust becomes one of the biggest challenges for businesses and payment providers.
To address this, LoopXPay has been enrolled in Visa’s Agentic Directory, a registry designed to verify the identity of AI agents before they conduct transactions. This infrastructure works alongside Visa’s Trusted Agent Protocol, which enables merchants and financial institutions to confirm that an AI agent has the appropriate authorization to act on behalf of a business.
By introducing identity verification, transparent authorization, and spending controls, Visa aims to create a trusted framework where organizations can confidently delegate purchasing and payment tasks to autonomous AI systems without compromising security or governance.
Building the Foundation for the Agent Economy
Visa and LianLian view this transaction as more than a technology demonstration. It represents an early step toward what many industry experts describe as the Agent Economy—an ecosystem where autonomous AI agents perform business activities, negotiate with suppliers, optimize purchasing decisions, and execute payments with minimal human involvement.
The companies are already exploring broader enterprise applications for Agentic AI, including procurement automation, digital advertising optimization, and AI-driven payment workflows across B2B marketplaces. As AI becomes increasingly embedded within business operations, payments will play a central role in connecting autonomous decision-making with commercial execution.
LianLian’s Global Payments Infrastructure
Founded in 2009, LianLian DigiTech has grown into one of China’s leading cross-border payment providers. Listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange since 2024, the company operates an extensive international payments network with dozens of regulatory licenses, supporting businesses across more than 200 countries and regions.
Its platform enables settlements in over 140 currencies and integrates with hundreds of global e-commerce platforms, making it well positioned to support AI-driven international commerce.
A New Role for Payment Networks
The collaboration also signals an important shift in the responsibilities of payment providers. Traditionally, payment networks focused on securely processing transactions between buyers and sellers. As Agentic AI becomes more prevalent, payment providers will also need to establish the infrastructure that governs AI identity, transaction authorization, spending controls, and accountability.
In the future, competitive advantage may depend not only on payment speed or transaction volume but also on the ability to provide trusted digital identities and governance frameworks for autonomous AI agents.
Looking Ahead
The successful completion of Greater China’s first live B2B agentic payment transaction demonstrates that autonomous AI is beginning to move from experimentation to commercial reality. As businesses increasingly adopt AI agents for procurement, finance, and operations, secure identity verification and governance will become essential building blocks of the emerging Agent Economy.
The Visa–LianLian partnership offers an early glimpse into how intelligent AI agents could reshape global commerce, enabling organizations to automate complex purchasing processes while maintaining transparency, compliance, and control over every transaction.
